Omaha beach, the battle of Normandy
Discover the beaches of D-Day
6 June 1944, it should be the decisive attack of the allies to liberate Europe from the nazi regime and thereby terminate the second world war. A decision attack that ran otherwise than planned. The enemy was prepared for the attack, the bad weather made it very difficult and the land was almost impossable to reach by the densely vegetated dunes. D-day was a debilitating struggle that lasted much longer than expected. Nowadays the Beach reminds us of the atrocities of the battle of Normandy.
In the region la Basse Normandie, we find the beaches of the battle of Normandy.
We start our tour with a visit to the Musée Mémorial d'Omaha Beach where the terrible events of the war are brought clearly into view. Through an information film, an imitation of real situations and all kinds of objects which are found on the beaches, the museum brings a tribute to the fallen soldiers.
After the museum we visit the American military cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer. Adjacent to the cemetery we enter Omaha Beach. A wide and vast beach what is an important Memorial to commemorate the battle. Descending through the dunes we can well imagine how difficult it has been for the allied soldiers to reach the land.

We continue our tour towards the Pointe du Hoc, a coastal strip that literally runs into a point from which the enemy had a perfect overview on the beach. Standing at the pointe du Hoc, it becomes clear how Allied commandos climbed up the cliffs with ropes and defeated the enemy. We still find many bunkers, ruins of flak and many gun holes in the ground.
How peaceful and quiet the beach is nowadays, you don't have to be an expert to experience what inpact the battle of Normandy has had. With a visit to Omaha beach we let the history talk and commemorate all who have given their lives for our freedom.
